The Effectiveness of Sequence Pictures as Medium in Teaching Writing for Students

Abstract

The present study is conducted to describe the students' ability to write short paragraph by using sequence pictures as medium for the second grade students of SMU ELIM Makassar in the academic year 2009/2010. This study atternpts to answer two research questifis.: (1) mes the use of sequence pictures significantly develop tie students' ability in writing short paragraph? (2) Is there any significant difference in the students' achievement between using sequence pictures and conventional technique in writing short paragraph?. In this study the design of the study is experimental design. There were two groups: The experimental and control group. The researcher conducted the research and took 50 students as the samples. The procedure of data cottection in fre classroom that divided into tuo groups were by observing, interviewing and testing. To collect data the researcher used writing test The test was made for pra-test and Post-Test. The findings of this research show the result of use of sequence pictures to guide the students (experimental group) to write short paragraph is stitl tower than (control group) taught through conventional technique. The result of this research showed that the ttest value was tower than Gable value, where test value was -2.148 < value was 2.060 at the level of significance 0.05 and tie degree of freedom was 48. This means that Ho is rejected. So, the application of writing short paragraph through sequence does not give significantly greater contribution to the students because it could not improve the students ability and their achievement better than convenüonal technique that is applied in control group. This research also finds that the lack motivation of  the students to learn English.
